Highlights of our Fall 2004 Handcrafted Holidays Tour:

Fiber, Craft & Textile Artists Tour of England & Wales: October 4-18, 2004

First there is London................
One of the most exciting and intersting cities on earth. Everything from the gaudy, fast pace of Piccadilly Circus, to Big Ben and the Tower of London, to little postage-stamp-size neighborhood gardens, to great theater, museums, and shopping. We will spend the first few days of our trip in  London, and our activities will include:

  • Victoria & Albert Museum: We will have a private docent tour of some of their collections
  • Harrod’s Department Store: The food halls alone are worth a visit to this grand shopping emporium
  • Shopping: I will let you in on some of my favorite finds for everything from ribbons to chocolates.
  • Knitting & Stitching Show at Alexandra Palace: This wonderful show offers something for anyone interested in the fiber arts. They have a full schedule of workshops that you will be able to  sign up for; special showings of the latest and best work of talented fiber artists; and always an amazing exhibit of the work of people who have responded to their annual competition. The huge vendor market  offers everything from fibers, to yarns, to fabrics, to buttons, beads, and braids. This show is a great gathering place and much anticipated every year. And you will be there to enjoy it all!

Then it’s off to Bath for 2 nights in this wonderfully elegant gem of a city. We will take in the sights including:

  • The Roman Baths: a wonder of engineering and beauty
  • The Costume Museum: a fascinating look at what we have been wearing down through the ages
  • The American Mueum: We will be there for a very special exhibition called “Stars, Stripes, & Spirals: Quilts from Wales and America”.

Next we are off to South Wales, where you will meet some of the wonderful craftmakers in this area that is so rich in talent and natural beauty. You will meet:

  • Susie Vaughan: A basketmaker who finds the most vibrant colors in natural materials, and weaves them all into her gorgeous hedgerow baskets. We will meet Susie at her home, see her baskets, and  get a tour of her garden where she grows some of the colorful willows that she uses in her work.
  • Jen Jones: Her lovely shop housed in a converted cottage is where you will see a collection of Welsh quilts that will take your breath away. Jen is an expert in Welsh quilts, including the  whole-cloth quilts that were so typical in Wales, and she has her shop packed to the rafters with these jewels, along with a small eclectic selection of antiques. Going to Jen Jones Quilts is worth a trip to South Wales all on it’s own.
  • Snail Trail Handweavers: The lovely folks at Snail Trail, Martin and Nina Weatherhead, offer workshops in spinning, weaving, dyeing, and rugmaking. Martin is an expert in Ikat weaving. We will  spend time here taking a workshop and seeing Martin’s rugs and other woven pieces.

Leaving South Wales, we will make our way through the scenic Wye Valley and into the Cotswolds, where we will spend a night in one of the lovely villages it is so justly famous for, and visit a button museum too.

Then it’s back to London, in time to take in the Chelsea Craft Fair at the Chelsea Town Hall! This is the 25th  Anniversary year for the fair, which is sponsored by the venerable Crafts Council. It is considered the best of the best of British craft and is one of the most exciting fairs I’ve ever attended. And you will be  there too! There will also be time for sightseeing, theater, or just leisurely wandering.

This is just an overview of what you can expect to experience when you come with us on the Fiber, Craft, & Textile Artists Tour this Fall 2004. There are lots more details, and a few surprises too.
